The number of colors is defined as color depth in bits. The simple ones
are 8, 16 and 24 and not so simple are 15 and 32. I am not so sure if 15
is used any more and what advantage 32 would give.
If you want to control individual colors, look at the
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt. It lists 752 colors, and changing them
shouldn't be so big job. Maybe also google for xorg linux rgb.txt and look
at what "apropos rgb" says.
