I have finally managed to solve my network connection problem.
Although I still do not know what originally caused the trouble, the
solution anyway was to use the right driver to the ethernet card. (My
ethernet card was not SiS900/7016 .., and the error message was correct)

My computer has started giving the following message:
"cannot open network device eth1 ..", when logging in, and the same thing
happens when I try to activate with "network configurator" some of the
connections.  (Eth1 is an ethernet card "SiS900/7016 PCI FAST Ethernet"). 
Configurator is not able to find the following: "SIOCGIFXQLEN" ja "set
Essid". The error message advises to check the cable, which I do not take
very seriously, because Internet in Windows is running OK.
I have tried to upgrade Lineox (linux upgradeany), but it did not help, If I
need to install new packages, I could get them through Windows, but not
directly from Linux.
(The problem arose, when trying to install openvpn (and lzo-1.08) of
University of Helsinki, but I cannot figure how this could affect the
connection when openvpn is turned off. Maybe it could?
