Lineox julkaisee Lineox Enterprise Linuxin

29. 1. 2004

Turkulainen Lineox Oy julkaisee Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0:n ja
päivityspalvelun Red Hat 7.x-versioille sekä vuoden 2003 Suomen
myydyimmälle Linuxille, Spectra Linux 1.2:lle.

Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0 on uusi Linuxin levitysversio, jonka pohjana
on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0:n lähdekoodi. Lineox Enterprise Linux
3.0 tarjoaa asiakkaille raskaaseen yrityskäyttöön soveltuvan Linuxin
edulliseen hintaan ja asiakas voi hankkia tuotteen tuen erikseen. Lineox
Enterprise Linux 3.0 on saatavilla välittömästi DVD-ROM-levyllä.
Suositushinta on 17,95 € ja IT Pressiltä saatavan asennusoppaan mukana
29,90 €.

Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0:ssa on kaikki vapaasti levitettävät
ohjelmat, jotka ovat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 AS/ES/WS-versioissa,
Red Hat Cluster Suitessa ja Red Hat Developer Suitessa. Samalla
DVD-levyllä on myös kuusi eri kieliversiota OpenOffice.org 1.1.0:sta,
oikolukusanastoja ja muita tukitiedostoja, mukaanlukien suomenkielinen
versio ja oikolukohjelma. Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0:n suositeltavin
ohjelmapakettien hallintaohjelma on apt-get, joka selvittää
automaattisesti ohjelmien väliset riippuvuudet. Lineox Enterprise Linux
3.0:n käyttäjät voivat sen avulla hakea tietoturva- ja muita päivityksiä
sekä uusia ohjelmia www.lineox.com:sta ja muilta Internetin
palvelimilta. Apt-getin sijasta voidaan käyttää synapticia, joka on
apt-getin graafinen edustaohjelma. Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0
DVD-levyllä on laaja valikoima peruslevitysversioon kuulumattomia
ohjelmia, joita voidaan helpolla asentaa ja hallita synapticin avulla.

Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0:n dokumentaation tärkein osa on LIFF -
täydellinen Linuxin dokumentaatiokokoelma. Sisällöstä voidaan mainita
mm. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0:n oppaat, joista tulostettuna kertyisi
yhteensä 2 772 sivua. LIFFiä voidaan käyttää dokumenttipalvelimena ja
sen sisältämään 900 megatavun tiedostomäärään voidaan tehdä hakuja ja
tulokset saadaan sekunneissa. LIFF on myös saatavilla erillisenä tuotteena.

Greetings,
I guess I'm not a total newbie, after all, but I get this strange =
behaviour from Lineox 3.0 (downloaded DVD image). I'm trying to get ISDN =
to work. I tried a series of kernels, rpms (2.6.4, from =
people.redhat.com/arjanv - got the modutils etc. from there too), 2.4.22 =
from somewhere else, compiled my own 2.6.4 from source (with isdn4linux =
included), but always get the same error when booting: Loading ISDN =
modules Failed!
The strange thing is, when I boot my own, compiled from source, 2.6.4 =
kernel, I can do modprobe hisax & isdn, without an error, but dmesg =
doesn't "see" them...
In all other kernels, and I compiled 2.4.21 from source too, I get an =
error.
One more strange thing. When I upgraded modutils, and device-mapper, and =
when I do mkinitrd, I get : Something about not including device-mapper =
in kernel. Command failed. But it still creates initrd.img, and kernel =
boots normally. (except for the ISDN modules, of course).
Where do I look next?

TIA

Zoran

Dear Friend,

As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday.
My name is BATES ALAN a merchant in Dubai, in the U.A.E.I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer.
It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.
I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world.
I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as a few close friends.
I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give alms to charity
organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the U.A.E, Algeria and Malaysia.
Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization in Bulgaria and Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left
for them.
The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge cash deposit of eighteen million dollars $18,000,000,00 that I have with a finance/Security Company abroad. I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatched it to charity organizations.
I have set aside 10% for you and for your time.

God be with you.

BATES ALAN

Hello,
I have a small problem (I've read that there is no support for Lineox
but anyway :)) - I have installed the system, it runs fine, but when I
wanted to add/remove some programs I got a message from the
redhat-config-packages "Installation Tree Not Found. The path /mnt/cdrom
does not look like a valid installation source". I have put a CD1 but
still without any success. CD1 was mounted, it had a file .diskinfo at
/mnt/cdrom , but the config program did not like it for whatever reason.
Only after I gave it the explicite tree path I could start it
(redhat-config-packages -t /mnt/cdrom).

But now I got another problem - I could choose a packages for
adding/removing but when I started the operation,
redhat-config-packages suddenly exited because it did not file the
certain RPM file - fine, but this RPM file is located on another CD disk!!
So it looks like it is somehow not possible for me now to update the
installation.

Is it possible to somehow teach the redhat-config-packages ot should I
do the add/remove by hand ?

With respect,
Mikhail

I haven't even tried redhat-config-packages because apt-get and synaptic
are as good or better and offer much more freedom. The same reason is
behind that Lineox names apt tools as preferred package management
system. We have a larger web page editing brewing and there is also a
page with apt repository links.

The error most probably is caused by different directory name than
redhat-config-packages expects. Maybe I should just add a link called
Redhat pointing to Lineox?

Synaptic first reads all the package files before installation begins.
First you have to add or register each CD, but that is one time operation.

Folks,

If you have grabbed the latest j2re-1.4.2-6.1 (Java Runtime)
from DAG, or elsewhere, you may notice your PATH is hosed in
sub-shells. Given the badness produced by this bug, I've
submitted a bug report to Sun.

Since it may take awhile to propagate outward, please
see the following for a description and _my_ fix.

Thanks,

/bill

 PATH

Hi Bill Thompson,

Thank you for submitting a bug using our bug submit page.

We have determined that this report is a new bug and entered the bug into o=
ur
internal bug tracking system under Bug Id: 5057118.

-- Report --
category : java
release : 1.4.2
subcategory : install
type : bug
synopsis : /etc/profile.d/java.sh overwrites PATH
description : FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.4.2_04"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_04-b05, mixed mode)

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
The rpm package command:

# rpm -qf java.sh
j2re-1.4.2-6.1.el3.dag

indicates /etc/profile.d/java.sh is from j2re-1.4.2-6.1.el3 from Dag Wieers=
.

The file in question overwrites the PATH variable against common practice
and producing badness. I have modified as follows:

-- cut here --
JREHOME=3D"/usr/lib/jre/lib/i386"
JAVAWSHOME=3D"/usr/lib/jre/javaws"
# LibreSolutions
#LD_LIBRARY_PATH=3D"::"
if ! echo ${LD_LIBRARY_PATH} | grep -q "::" ; then
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=3D"${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}::"
fi
# LibreSolutions
#PATH=3D"/usr/kerberos/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X=
11R6/bin:/usr/lib/jre/bin"
if ! echo ${PATH} | grep -q "/usr/lib/jre/bin" ; then
    PATH=3D${PATH}:/usr/lib/jre/bin
fi
-- cut here --

If you've already fixed this, sorry to bother you.

Thanks,

/bill

First of all this has already been fixed 2 days ago. Secondly, this is not
Sun's fault. If you do an update, you'll pull the fixed package.

That libmpg123.so should not go to root dir. I have notified Dag about
this and his repository should have a fixed version soon, but he has not
replied yet.

For now and if you have LEL 3.0 DVD, just install the package and give
the command:

mv /libmpg123.so /usr/lib/xmms/Input/

And your mp3 files should be playable by xmms.

I want to incorporate the updates from I get into my NFS mounted directory
so that my PXE install with ks will use them.
How can I do it?
I also recompiled the kernel applying some patches that I need and built
the distribution RPMs for them. How can I also incorporate that to the tree?
Thanks.

Kickstart file lists only package names or groups, not versions or
releases, so you can just replace old packages with new ones.
Anaconda-runtime has some python script which does the replacing, but it
propably doesn't fit your situation as it is.

I am not sure if kickstart needs hdlist file also, but that can be
generated with /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/genhdlist --withnumbers <root
dir of LEL> and genhdlist is also in anaconda-runtime.

Update 4 has some problematic packages.

rpm*4.2.3-13.i386.rpm
=====================

This was released only as a paid update, but was recalled soon after
release. Apparently it must be built after updating to glibc which is a
part of Update 4. If you have installed it, there are two solutions.
Either downgrade rpm-libs to version rpm-libs-4.2.3-10.i386.rpm by hand
(mc can "dive" into rpm packages and you can easily copy files from
them. There also other file manager type of applications which have the
same capability). This is quite ugly and not recommended because there
is a better solution. Create or add to the file /etc/rpm/macros a line:

%__dbi_cdb create cdb private mpool mp_mmapsize=16Mb mp_size=1Mb

A similar bug is described at:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=82764

If you give any rpm command you should see:

rpmdb: Berkeley DB library configured to support only DB_PRIVATE
environments
error: db4 error(22) from dbenv->open: Invalid argument
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Invalid argument (22)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

if you are bitten by this bug. If you get any other unusual error
message, the standard way of fixing it is to issue the command:

rm /var/lib/rpm/__*

And also in some cases:

rpm --rebuilddb

The reason Lineox will continue to wait with releasing
rpm*4.2.3-13.i386.rpm again is that there are also other problems with
it and rpm*4.2.3-10.i386.rpm has proven to be quite good and the new
version adds or fixes less that the new version seems to broke. See
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=143532 for more info.

redhat-lsb-1.3-3.1.EL3 and apt-get
==================================

There is a sort of circular dependency in this package and "apt-get
install redhat-lsb" complains that /usr/lib/lsb/install_initd and
/usr/lib/lsb/remove_initd are needed to install redhat-lsb, but they are
also provided by it. Just use "rpm -U redhat-lsb-1.3-3.1.EL3*.rpm".

dhclient-3.0.1-10_EL3
=====================

This package has a broken /sbin/dhclient-script which calls a function
change_resolv_conf which is not defined anywhere. The effect of this is
that the other data obtained by DHCP is ok, but /etc/resolv.conf, which
lists DNS or name servers is not created or updated. Continue to use the
older dhclient-3.0pl2-6.14.1.i386.rpm. If you have installed or upgraded
dhclient-3.0.1-10_EL3 downgrade with "rpm -U --force
dhclient-3.0pl2-6.14.1.i386.rpm".

perl-5.8.0-88.9.i386.rpm
========================

This package causes Apache not to start. The real culprit is mod_perl
package which tries to load libperl.so from a wrong location, but fixing
mod_perl was not so easy when it was initially released or now because
it won't build on LEL and Red Hat probably built it on RH 9 or some of
the RHEL 3 betas. If you are bitten by this bug, you will see:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start
Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 10 of /etc/httpd/conf.d/perl.conf:
Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_perl.so into server: libperl.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
                                                            [FAILED]
The fix is simple:

ln -sv /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/noarch-linux-thread-multi

Lineox will release soon a new perl package so this bug won't require
manual fixing in the future.

x86_64 version
==============

rpm*4.2.3-13.i386.rpm was released as a part of Update 4 and there are
not yet any reported problems.

redhat-lsb-1.3-3.1.EL3 and dhclient-3.0.1-10_EL3 should be the same as
on x86 version.

perl-5.8.0-88.9.x86_64.rpm has no problems.

Openoffice.org
==============

Openoffice.org was not included in the original Update 4 version, but it
is included starting from the Always Current version 3.058. If you have
older version installed, install packages:

fontconfig-2.2.1-13.i386.rpm
gtk2-2.2.4-12.i386.rpm
libpng-1.2.2-25.i386.rpm
libtiff-3.5.7-22.el3.i386.rpm
openoffice.org-i18n-1.1.0-16.14.EL.i386.rpm
openoffice.org-libs-1.1.0-16.14.EL.i386.rpm
openoffice.org-style-gnome-1.1.0-16.9.EL.i386.rpm
openoffice.org-1.1.0-16.14.EL.i386.rpm
pango-1.2.5-5.i386.rpm

from the LEL 3.0 i386 download directory to get Openffice.org.

Is it possible and reliable to upgrade to LEL4 from LEL3,
or should I do a clean install? Opinions? Facts?

LEL 4.0 uses udev device file system and because of that the only
reliable way to upgrade is booting from installation disk(s). You can
use nfs/ftp/http/images on hard disk installation methods, the important
thing is that the installation environment is LEL 4 based and
understands udev. I haven't yet tried upgrade, so you should write
"linux upgradeany" at the boot prompt.

If you want to use SE-Linux, a clean installation is preferred because
ext3 has some SE-Linux spesific extentions in 4.0. This is more of an
opinion, there may be a way to add them later.
