========================================================================== Product: Lineox LIFF Version: 1.0 Date: August 21, 2003 ========================================================================== ============ Introduction ============ Lineox LIFF contains documentation, providing both beginners and advanced users plenty of material for harnessing the power of the Linux operating system. The documentation is fully indexed and the UI has a search functionality that finds the right documents quickly. You can either install the documents to your hard disk or read them directly from this CD. This document contains information not available in the printed or on-line documentation. =================== End of Introduction =================== ====================== Included In This File: ====================== * Directory Organization * System requirements * Htdig version issues * Compatibility with different Linux distributions * Installing * Getting Help * Copyright Notice * Waiver of Liability * Warranties Disclaimer ============================ End of Included In This File ============================ ====================== Directory Organization ====================== Lineox LIFF contains the following directory structure: |----> docs Document directory |----> htdig Index directory |----> htdigrpms htdig 3.1.6 rpm packages |----> LIFF LIFF menus |----> TRANS.TBL |----> LIFF.conf LIFF configuration file for htdig `----> LIFFinstall LIFF installation program ============================= End of Directory Organization ============================= =================== System requirements =================== Xdialog/dialog LIFF installation program needs either dialog or Xdialog. If both are missing, the installation can not continue. Apache, htdig, htdig-web LIFF installation program checks if apache or httpd rpm package is installed and complains if they can't be found. The same procedure is repeated for htdig and htdig-web rpm packages. The installation can however continue as the user might have installed these programs from source or the system doesn't support rpm. ========================== End of System requirements ========================== ==================== Htdig version issues ==================== To use LIFF, you must up/downgrade htdig to latest stable version which is 3.1.6. You can find htdig 3.1.6 rpm packages from directory htdigrpms on this CD-ROM. They are intented for different Red Hat versions, so read the README file found in that directory. Most recent Linux distributions have included beta versions on htdig version 3.2.0 while the most recent stable version is 3.1.6. This is important because different beta versions of htdig 3.2.0 have had incompatible index formats. They are again incompatible with stable version of htdig. Therefore it would be difficult and impractical to choose and support beta version of htdig. The other most important differences of htdig 3.1.6 and various 3.2.0 betas is compression support and indexing speed. Htdig 3.1.6 produces approximately twice as large indices as beta versions. The indexing speed however turns the balance around in many cases. Htdig 3.1.6 produces indices approximately 20 times faster than 3.2.0 betas do. If you choose to install LIFF as a CD-ROM image, the index size issue between htdig versions is irrelevant. The indices that beta versions produce take almost exactly as much space in compressed format as indices produced by the stable version. If you index your own files with htdig, the speed difference is so remarkable, that you really should use htdig 3.1.6 instead of 3.2.0 betas. Indexing the documents found in LIFF takes 1 hour 15 minutes with 733 MHz Pentium III and htdig 3.1.6 and 14 hours with AMD Athlon XP 2000+ and htdig 3.2.0 beta. =========================== End of Htdig version issues =========================== ================================================ Compatibility with different Linux distributions ================================================ Lineox LIFF is designed to be a documentation center of Lineox Linux. A big part of LIFF documentation is documents included in Lineox Linux programs. These same programs are typically included also in other Linux distributions, but there are also some programs which are not included in other distribtions and some distributions have programs which are not part of Lineox Linux. Even more probable is that program versions differ. Red Hat and Mandrake manuals are of course specific to these distributions, but they contain also much generic information. Linux Documentation project guides including HOWTO documents aim usually to be not distribution specific. Man pages and info pages change usually so slowly that they are fully usable in any current distribution. The programs LIFF needs during installation and use should be included in all current distributions. For details, see previous topics. ======================================================= End of Compatibility with different Linux distributions ======================================================= ========== Installing ========== To install LIFF to your hard drive: Run LIFFinstall. Before doing so, You might want to check that you have installed packages dialog, apache, htdig, and htdig-web. To do so run command: rpm -q dialog apache htdig htdig-web If You want to install in graphical mode, You need package Xdialog instead of dialog. If You want to install in text mode, but have both dialog and Xdialog packages installed, run LIFFinstall with command: [insert path to CD]/LIFFinstall --text ================= End of Installing ================= ============ Getting Help ============ The Lineox website can be found at http://www.lineox.com. =================== End of Getting Help =================== ================ Copyright Notice ================ The contents of this CD-ROM are Copyright (C) 2003 Lineox and others.
